      Great question.  Many people are seeking input on this topic.  First, I invite you to consider that stress is a choice.  The best way to reduce stress is not to choose it in the first place.  Have a look at the people, places, or things that seem to trigger your anxiety.  Most of the time, we react to the events that occur in our lives. Instead, consider taking that all so important PAUSE between stimulus and response.  Taking a moment gives you time to collect your emotions and decide the best way to move forward. Here are some simple ways to relieve those uneasy feelings when they arise:

      1. Get some exercise. Physical movement can mitigate mental strain. Exercise also lowers the stress hormones in your body and increases the release of endorphins. The release of these chemicals helps to improve your mood.

      2. Consider using supplements. Valerian, green tea, lemon balm, and omega-3 fatty acids are some to consider. However, before taking supplements, be sure to consult your doctor as they may have adverse effects on the medication you are taking or other medical conditions.

      3. Carve out some quiet time for yourself each day. Use this time to sit quietly and meditate, write in your journal, or read inspiring books or quotes. During this time, practice some deep breathing, which will slow your heart rate and allow you to feel more peaceful.

      4. Stop procrastinating. Putting things off until the last minute is a sure way to raise tension. Chunk down your to-do list and commit to accomplishing it in an orderly and timely way.

      5. No is a complete answer. If you have found yourself taking on more than you want, and feeling overwhelmed, learn to say no. Discipline yourself to say yes to the things that bring you peace, joy, and contentment and no to things that don’t.

      6. Watch some comedy. Laughing is a terrific way to decrease stress. Laughing also aids in improving your immune system.

      7. Limit your intake of caffeine. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate are high caffeine items. The effects of too much may cause you to feel jittery and uneasy. Instead, drink plenty of water and consume plant-based foods.

      8. Consider using essential oils. The scent of many of the oils can be soothing. Lavender, rose, lemon, and orange or orange blossom are what I would recommend.

      9. Put on some calming music. Nature sounds can also be a good choice. Better yet, go for a nature walk and sit quietly and take it all in.

      10. Hang out with your pet. Pets are unconditional with their love, and they provide lovely companionship.
