Home Forums Vocation I’m fully in my mid-life crisis and I want to do something entirely different professionally. I’ve spent my career as an accountant and feel that I’ve done it all and am now very bored with that work. The trouble is – I don’t know what I want to do now, I just know it’s not accounting. Are there any exercises you could recommend that can help me get clear on how to find my next ’thing’? The first thing that I would invite you to do is redefine the ‘mid-life crisis’. Think of this as a time to explore other opportunities to contribute. It is great that you want to do something different professionally. I am sure that being an accountant has taught you many skills that are transferable to many other trades or professions. How do you decide what you want to do? Well, I would sit down and list all the things that you enjoy doing that when you are doing them time flies. What types of activities bring you joy? What type of environment makes you feel good? What is your favorite hobby? Could that be turned into satisfying work? Allow yourself to let go of attachments and identities that no longer suit you. Take a few classes, do some research, volunteer, get out of your normal routine and see what happens.
